We strip or kill what is there, grade for drainage away from the house, till and amend the top layer so roots have somewhere to go, then lay the pieces tight and staggered with no gaps for weeds to find. Delivery is timed so the pallets go down the day they arrive, because sod sitting on a driveway in Carolina heat is already dying.
